About recruitment reels:
Video is the most effective communication tool available for young athletes seeking a next-level experience, and recruitment videos are a necessary tool to market your athlete’s skills to coaches, recruiters, or scouts.
If you’re looking to provide sports recruiting videos to a “select” team, entering high school, or preparing for opportunities that colleges and universities have to offer, YSP can help. I’m motivated to support young athletes through the process by creating effective recruitment videos that will help showcase their talents.
What goes into a recruitment reel?
- Include the right highlights for your sports – Depending on your sport, coaches will be looking for different types of footage. It’s important for basketball, hockey, and football videos to show in game footage, but sports such as baseball and softball should focus more on technical skills. YSP has good knowledge on content that goes into sport specific recruitment reels, but it’s always added value to talk to your respective coach for their perspective on what’s best for you.
- Videos should be approximately three to five minutes – Think like a coach/recruiter, don’t waste your time or money putting together a reel that coaches won’t make it through. They often watch 10 to 20 recruitment videos a day; keep it simple to retain interest. If a coach wants to see footage of a whole game, they will request it.
- Provide about a short bio intro – At the beginning of the reel we add a quick bio and picture of the athlete which generally includes their name, school/organization, jersey number, position, height, weight, accolades, GPA, graduation year and contact information. We also add this at the end of the reel.
- Front load your best clips – Always start off with your best clip first and stay consistent by front loading your most impactful clips. If you start out strong, you have a better chance of immediately engaging and retaining a recruiter’s attention.
- Who chooses the clips to use? – I leave this entirely up to you. Whether YSP is providing the footage, or you’re supplying the clips, I leave the option up to you. You can either select the clips you would like to use, in order of most impactful, or I can use my expertise and select the clips for you.
- Hudl footage – I welcome Hudl footage and encourage incorporating your film with any film we may have. High Schools are often restricted in the way they film a game, and as a result the viewing distance or quality may not be something that is as impactful for recruiters to view. Discounts are offered when incorporating your footage with ours to help support your athletes needs.
- We use a freeze frames with an identifier at the start of every clip – Before your clip begins, I freeze the video for a few seconds and add a marker to identify athletes so coaches can easily locate them on the field before the play starts.
- Only use high quality video – We film all our games in high quality 1080P/60FPS with a fluid head tripod, shooting from the best optimal viewing position the venue has to offer. My goal is to provide recruiters with the best possible footage, making it easy to assess your athlete’s skill sets.
- Keep it simple – There’s no need to include special editing effects or music in your recruitment reels. Coaches want to see raw footage in real time and don’t need distractions that could potentially take them away from assessing your athlete. If you provide them with offensive music, they might just turn it off.
- How do I get the Recruitment Reel to you? – I use some of the best editing software available, and when finished provide you with a YouTube link of your recruitment reel to forward to coaches. I can also forward the file to you via Google Drive, Dropbox or supply a USB stick if absolutely necessary (extra), to put on your social media and forward to recruiters. Whatever your needs are I will support you through the process.
